Our Goals

Building on the renowned work of Oswald von Zingerle (ed., Mittelalterliche Inventare aus Tirol und Vorarlberg, Innsbruck 1909), we are working on a newly revised edition of the Tyrolean castle inventories. Using modern methods, we are processing the inventories of castles such as Thaur, Rattenberg, Schloss Tirol, Castel Pergine, Heinfels, Tratzberg, Runkelstein, and many more.

By utilising digital technologies, we are able to analyse the contents of the inventories from both a historical and a semantic perspective. This provides us with new insights into how the practice of inventory-taking has evolved. As a result, these sources enable us to learn more about social life in castles and the history of Tyrol.

Insights beyond Tyrol

As well as providing insights into Tyrolean history, our work also yields general findings, such as:

  • Methods for cataloguing historical inventories
  • Data processing techniques for inventories
  • Studies on material culture and the differentiation of spaces within castles, with particular attention to gender-specific aspects
  • Insights into the development of material culture from the Middle Ages to the Early Modern Period, including in the context of a possible consumer revolution during this period.

  • Methods for linking architecturally verified building data with information derived from historical inventories.
